UAAP: De la Salle University wins the Volleyball Cup!

Manila, Philippines

Season 80 of the UAAP (The University Athletic Association of the Philippines) is currently under way and here is the major highlight of the Volleyball event. UAAP Season 80 is the 2017?18 athletic year of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP). This season is being hosted by the Far Eastern University.

The eight member universities of the UAAP are competing in fifteen sports to vie for the overall championship. This season's sports events will include the inaugural 3-on-3 basketball as a demonstration sport to be held at Far Eastern University, Manila.

A Brief History of UAAP

The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), established in 1938, is a collegiate athletic association of eight Metro Manila universities in the Philippines. Member schools include Adamson University (AdU), Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), De La Salle University (DLSU), Far Eastern University (FEU), National University (NU), University of the East (UE), University of the Philippines (UP), and University of Santo Tomas (UST). Varsity teams from these universities compete annually in fifteen sports to vie for the overall championship title, namely, badminton, baseball, basketball, beach volleyball, chess, fencing, football, judo, softball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

The De La Salle University on Wednesday (DLSU) clinched the women?s Volleyball Cup

The match took place at 4:00 PM on Wednesday and was aired by ABS-CBN

Kim Kianna Dy, Majoy Baron and libero Dawn Macandili finished their swan song with a resounding 26-24, 25-20, 26-24, win over Far Eastern University to complete DLSU?s third grand slam Wednesday in Game 2 of the best-of-three UAAP Season 80 Finals series at the Big Dome.

Kim Kianna Dy closed her collegiate career with 19 points off 16 attacks, two kill blocks and a service ace for the Lady Spikers. Tin Tiamzon and Season 79 Most Valuable Player Baron had 10 markers each while Finals MVP Macandili on her last game tallied 21 digs and eight excellent receptions.

The fifth year opposite hitter stopped the Lady Tamaraws' furious comeback rally in the third set with a kill after FEU tied the frame at 24 following a 3-0 scoring spurt. Tiamzon sealed the championship with a crosscourt hit to finish off their overmatched rival, which played its first championship series in nine years.

DLSU showed grit in the first set coming back from a 24-21 deficit that proved to be the turning point of the match, which mirrored the same situation the Lady Spikers had in the series opener.

Graduating skipper Bernadeth Pons closed her collegiate career with a gallant effort, scoring 17 points with 15 digs and 15 excellent receptions for the Lady Tams.

The Lady Spikers captured their 11th title in 18 Finals appearance and third three-peat since Seasons 66 to 68 and Seasons 73 to 75.

Earlier, DLSU took Game 1 in straight sets, 29-27, 25-21, 25-22, last Saturday, to move a win closer from bagging their 11th crown and third grand slam.
