In Cuba you will find Engineers who are Barbers, Doctors who drive taxis and architects who sell newspapers. Surprised? Well, let me through some more light on it. 

Cuba is a country comprising the island of Cuba as well as Isla de la Juventud and several minor archipelagos. Cuba is located in the northern Caribbean where the Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean meet. Culturally, Cuba is considered part of Latin America. Since 1965; the state has been governed by the Communist Party of Cuba. Now, coming on to the point, yes its true Taxi drivers in Cuba earn more than the doctors and engineers there. Let's check out more about the situation this article. 

On average, a doctor in Cuba makes about $40 per month compared to $60 a day by the Taxi driver. Did you know that citizens in Cuba practice a side profession aside of their professional job to earn a living. Now, you might be wondering what the cause of this is. 

It all began during the mid 1950s. Cuba was a Spanish colony until the Spanish- American War in 1898. After the War, it was occupied by the United States and later Cuba gained nominal independence as a de facto United States protectorate in 1902. As a fragile republic, in 1940 Cuba attempted to strengthen its democratic system, but mounting political radicalization under Dictator Fulgencio Batista in 1952. It was known as the Batista Regime. Open corruption and oppression under Batista's rule led to his ousting during the year 1959. 

Now, Fidel Castro along with revolutionary Che Guevara was preparing for a revolutionary change in Cuba. In 1962, the efforts of Fidel Castro overthrew the Batista regime and since then the state has been governed by the Communist Party of Cuba. Fidel was loved by the Cubans, he had a great personality, and he is still the godfather of many communist leaders. Castro did not have good relations with the USA, so he joined hands with the Soviet Union, which aided Cuba with important amenities. During the Cold War, Castro allowed Soviet Union's missiles to land in Cuba pointed straight towards the US. US cut down all diplomatic relations with Cuba, leading to the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. Eventually, the missiles were removed form Cuba. Castro died a few years ago after governing the country for almost half a century, which brings us right down to Cuba's economy, and drivers earning more than doctors. 

After Fidel and Che overthrew the Batista regime, Fidel Castro?s government seized almost all private businesses on the land. Every restaurant, factory and hospitals were property of the government. The state set prices for everything and decided what people got paid meaning that the private sector literally disappeared overnight. 

As a result, many people migrated to the US. Fidel and Che were able to provide incredible medical facilities and education, they improved Cuba's literacy rate to almost 96%. But they are also hated by many people for giving a blow to the private sector. There are very less private license holders in Cuba. 

Government restaurants only have ham burgers and almost no business, the service is worse and the employees too many. Their salaries are set by the state. On the other hand private licensed restaurant have good service and good food. 

A government servant is living on a salary of $20 a month is as it sounds impossible for many families and this led to the rise of the black market where citizens could do extra jobs to get more income. You might also be surprised to know that there is no internet in Cuba, besides some hotspots that allow surfing for only 1 hour. Internet and media are considered to be fatal for socialism as mentioned by the socialist government. 

However, in the recent times, after Castro's death, many private licenses are being given to the Cubans. Since 2008 and 20% of the economy is now private.
