Iceland settles Argentina at a 1-1 draw!

Saturday, IST 8:30

A small nation stood tall against one of the best football nations today at the FIFA World Cup, 2018. Argentina which is one of the leading contenders for the Cup were settled by Iceland at a 1-1 draw and proved that they did not come to Russia not only to add to the numbers but that they are in the fight as well.

Iceland is to celebrate its Independence Day tomorrow and the country has a great deal to celebrate now. Argentine attack was stopped by Iceland?s mighty defence and the star player Lionel Messi was denied 10 times by the opposition?s goal keeper Halldorsson.

Argentine former player Diego Maradona was present to witness the first ever encounter between Argentina and Iceland in the Spartak Stadium.

At 19? Sergio Aguero placed the ball at the back of the net on the top corner, to take Argentina in a lead. This was what the audience had expected, Argentina leading the way right up front. But Iceland bounced back with a great response on the 23? as Alfred Finnbogason scored the equalizer by a cross drilled from the right flank! This was Iceland?s first ever goal in a World Cup.

At 64? Argentina was awarded a spot kick after a tackle on Messi was gone wrong in the box, Argentine Striker Lionel Messi was once again stopped by Halldorsson. It wasn?t Messi?s day after all.

With three quarters of possession, 27 attempts on goal and 10 corners, Argentina failed to take a lead. On the other hand Iceland with 8 shots on target and 2 corners had scored once, and that was enough.

At the end of the day what mattered was the number of goals and that seemed to make all the difference for Argentina.
