The tenure of Karnataka assembly ends on May 28, 2018, thereby an election was held in Karnataka on 12 May 2018 in 223 constituencies out of 224 of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. This Election was expected to set the highlight for the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections. Let?s have a look at the outcome. 

Today the counting of votes had begun at 40 centers across Karnataka after the state went to polls in one of the most unpredictable state elections on Saturday last week. Billed as the vital precursor to the state elections in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh.   

The tally of Congress has been reduced from 122 to 78 with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah losing from his traditional seat. The saffron flag is flying high even in Karnataka as BJP has secured 104 seats in the elections; this victory in Karnataka is going to give BJP the all-important push for the future elections in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. 

The Congress party has been able to guard its 2013 vote share of 37%, but the BJP has gained by 16%, taking its total share to above 36%. Janta Dal [JD] (S) has secured 37 seats and has added 2% to its earlier share of 20%.BJP won more number of seats in Muslim dominated areas whereas The INC gained seats in Dalit dominated areas. AAP candidates forfeited deposit in all 29 seats the party contested in Karnataka.

"If we look at the history of the BJP and the strength it has gained today, Congress never gained such strength in its history, Since 1996, the party has been marching forward and today 70 per cent of the states are ruled by the BJP and its allies," he said. 

A total of 113 seats are needed for a majority, so there is no clear majority for a single party. Therefore there will be an alliance. Now, there are speculations that the Congress and JD(S) might forge a post-poll alliance. Reports claim that the Congress is willing to give up on the chief ministerial post. 

Media reports are claiming that the Congress has reached out to the JD(S) to form the government in Karnataka. However, BJP says it?s confident of forming the government on its own. The Congress party has formally announced that they have offered the chief ministerial post to the JD(S). INC and JD(S) MLAs will meet tomorrow to discuss strategy for government formation.
