Dalai Lama and the Chinese
Dalai Lama is one of the most renowned spiritual leader and modern monk of the 21st century, who may be also called as the head of Tibetan Government in Exile. Government in exile sounds odd? Now let?s hit the nail on the head. China invaded Tibet in the year 1950 and negotiated the Seventeen Point Agreement with the newly enthroned 14th Dalai Lama's government. As a result of which there was a rebellion against the Chinese government in the region and the Dalai Lama fled to India along with his followers in the year 1959. Dalai Lama isn?t only just a monk with good quotes; there is a lot to him and Buddhism. Let?s find out more in this article.
Who is the Dalai Lama?
Dalai Lama is the head monk of the Tibetan Buddhism, and back in the days, the Dalai Lama was responsible for the governing Tibet. That all changed when Chinese government took control in 1959. Since then, the Dalai Lama is only the spiritual leader of Tibet, and fights for autonomy of Tibet. The 14th and current Dalai Lama is Tenzin Gyatso who was found by the 9th Dalai Lama. The selection of Dalai Lama is done through a mythological process of Tibetan Buddhism. According to which whenever a Dalai Lama dies he reincarnates as a child somewhere on the earth and then a person called Panchen Lama is responsible to find him and subsequently when a Panchen Lama dies , Dalai Lama plays a similar role in finding him.
Tensions between Tibet and China
Tibet plays an earth shattering role in china?s economy and development as it comprises of the major rivers which full fills the demands of ever growing Chinese population. The Tibetan mainland is rich in resources like gold and lithium and is the nest of many hydropower projects, which proves to be cherry on the cake for the rapidly developing economy of China. So in turn, China has left no stone unturned to maintain its possession over Tibet.
The Chinese government is very sensitive about any threat which can incite the flame of freedom in Tibet, which draws our attention towards Dalai Lama who is identified as a potential threat by Chinese Government. The communist government of China has destroyed many religious institutions of the Tibetans and almost 1.2 million Tibetans have died as a direct result of the Chinese invasion and occupation of Tibet. According to Freedom House (U.S. government-funded non-governmental organization) that conducts research and advocacy on democracy, political freedom, and human rights .Tibet was ranked as the second country after Syria where maximum human right violations took place. This gives us a bird?s eyes view over present situation of Chinese rule in Tibet till date.
Why the 14th Dalai Lama could be the last Dalai Lama?
We read about the mythological process of finding the Dalai Lama. Panchen Lama is responsible to find the next Dalai Lama and subsequently when a Panchen Lama dies , Dalai Lama plays a similar role in finding him.
So, here China enters the picture. In order to save its skin, China disrupted this religious process by abducting the last Panchen Lama who was found by 14th Dalai Lama. He was six years old at that time .His family was also arrested and there is no trace of him from last 20 years .To add fuel to the fire, Chinese officials used a 200 year old ceremony recently to name their own Panchen Lama .So that they could directly elect a new Dalai Lama and be at the zenith of Tibetan administration. But this ceremony of Chinese officials is like putting the cart before the horse as sole right of choosing a Panchen Lama resides with Dalai Lama only.
In an interview when his holiness was asked that if he might be the last reincarnation ever, he replied that it?s ?very possible ?and maintained the suspense over the next reincarnation. The death of 14th Dalai Lama could be a bolt from the blue for the Tibet.
At the length and breadth Dalai Lama?s relation with the leaders of the countries like USA and many other European countries sends shiver down the spine of Chinese officials and thus Chinese want Dalai Lama to end in smoke very soon. As the Chinese government may have gained control over the Tibetan mainland but it is still unable to gain a spiritual control over them.
