Two lovers rest side by side at Taj Mahal
Taj Mahal was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan, to house the tomb of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It also houses the tomb of Shah Jahan, the builder. The tomb is the centerpiece of a 17-hectare (42-acre) complex, which includes a mosque and a guest house, and is set in formal gardens bounded on three sides by a crenellated wall.
It is believed that the arms of the builders were amputated
It is a popular myth that when the construction of the Taj Mahal was completed, the monument looked so flawless, that the emperor Shah Jahan ordered the hands of the artisans to be cut off; he did so to prevent them from crafting another monument as beautiful and grand as the Taj Mahal.
However, the architect who lead the team of architects to build the Taj Mahal laid the foundation of the Red fort too. Ustad Ahmed Lahauri, was probably the leader of the architect's team.
Shah Jahan wanted to built an identical ?Black? Taj Mahal
Proofs have been found that Shah Jahan wanted to build another Taj Mahal just across the white Taj Mahal in the Mehtab Garden. In the writings of the European traveler, Tavernier mention that Shah Jahan began to build his own tomb on the other side of the river but could not com+plete it as he was killed by his own son Aurangzeb .
The artisans wanted to include a flaw in the Taj Mahal
The ceiling of the main hall of the Taj contains a small hole which is perpendicularly right above Mumtaj Mahal?s tombstone. It is said that one of the artisans left the hole so as to create a flaw and destroy the dream of Shah Jahan to make it flawless, they did is so after they came to know about Shah Jahan?s plan of amputating the hands all the artisans after completion of the construction.
The ASI (Archaeological Survey of India) had to conceal the Taj during WW-II.
During the 2nd Word War Taj was covered with a huge scaffold in the to misguide bombers, by doing so Taj Mahal looked like a stockpile of bamboo to bombers. Then during the India- Pakistan war in 1971, and after 9/11, it was protected by camouflaging it with a green cloth.
