A Header appears at the top of the page in any document. It can appear on all pages. A header can include the name of the project/ paper and page number or either of the two
A Footer appears at the bottom of any document. It can include the names of the team members and/or other copyright information or page numbers, or company name etc.
To include a header,
  1. Click on VIEW and select HEADER AND FOOTER.
  2. This highlights the area of the Header where you can type in the text you want to appear as header.
To insert page numbers, use the Insert AutoText (pop-up window) which appears along with the header. The toolbox has options to insert the page number, date, time, etc.
To edit the footer,
  1. Click on VIEW and select HEADER AND FOOTER.
  2. This highlights the area of the Header where you can type in the text you want to appear as header.
  3. Use the toolbox and click on the icon which switches between the Header and Footer.
  4. Once the footer area is highlighted, you can enter the text of the footer.
The content of the header and footer appear on all the pages of your document and are common for all the pages in the document. If you want a different header and footer for the your first page,
  1. Select the page setup icon from the toolbox.
  2. Select the Layout tab on the window check the option "Different First Page".
Now, you have a different Header and Footer for the first page and you can easily omit including the page number on the first page of your document.
