Google has confirmed that they will use the Google Play Services to update Android phones with the COVID-19 contact tracing system. The update has been recently put to every android phone running Android 6.0 Marshmallow or above. Google announced that its COVID-19 contact tracing system update will be applicable to both phases of the Bluetooth contact tracing framework. For phones like Huawei, Xiaomi, and other Chinese manufactured devices Google intends to publish a framework that these Chinese companies could use to replicate the secure, anonymous tracking system developed by Google. It will then be up to Chinese manufacturers or the Chinese government to decide whether to use the system.
What you need to start using this feature :
Download an app from your region's government public health authority. Turn on the Bluetooth on your phone.
Turn on your phone's location in the setting.
The system scans for Bluetooth signals of a nearby smartphone that have this system turned on. The system introduced by Google does not collect or track your location.
How does the app may determine exposure to COVID-19
If the app gets information that one has come in contact with someone having COVID-19, the system shares this information with other apps in the range:
The day when the contact happened.
How long the contact lasted.
The Bluetooth signal strength of that contact.
The COVID-19 Exposure Notifications System does not use or collect your location or share other users’ identities.
