Andrew Ng: Reinforcing Artificial Intelligence
Andrew Yan-Tak Ng is a Chinese Entrepreneur and computer scientist. He was the vice president and chief scientist of Baidu. He co-founded online Machine Learning website Coursera, and now is an adjunct professor at Stanford. Andrew is one of the most influential people in Deep Learning and Artificial Intelligence. He also founded and led Google Brain, a deep learning artificial intelligence research team at Google formed in 2010.
His motto is to work on technology inventions and put them into production. Andrew was born in 1976 and brought up in London. He belongs to the Chinese ethnicity. In 1992, he went to Singapore and completed his education from the Raffles Institution. Later, he went to Pennsylvania, the USA and did a bachelors degree in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University. He then went to Massachusetts Institute of Technology to do his masters. After masters, he received his PhD from University of California, Berkeley in 2002.
Initially, Andrew worked as a professor at the Stanford University in the department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. He became Director of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Lab where he taught students and undertook research related to data mining and machine learning. His deep learning course at Stanford is the most popular course offered on campus with over 1000 students enrolled.
From 2011 to 2012, he worked at Google, where he founded and was director of Google Brain Deep Learning Project named Google Brain. Google Brain combines open-ended machine learning research with system engineering and Google-scale computing resources.
In 2012, he co-founded and was CEO of Coursera which offers free online courses for everyone after over 100,000 students registered for Ng's popular course. Today, millions have taken the online course. Two years later in 2014, he married robotics expert and entrepreneur Carol E. Reiley.
In the same year, he joined the Chinese multinational technology giant Baidu as Chief Scientist, and carried out research related to big data and A.I. In March 2017, he announced his resignation from Baidu.
Thereafter, he has worked on a couple of online curriculum of classes such as Deeplearning.ai and Landing.ai. In 2018, Ng unveiled the AI Fund, raising $175 million to invest in new startups. He also wrote a book "Machine Learning Yearning", a practical guide for those interested in machine learning, which he distributed for free.
The 42-year-old has done several researches on AI. His early work includes the Stanford Autonomous Helicopter project, which developed one of the most capable autonomous helicopters in the world, and the STAIR (Stanford Artificial Intelligence Robot) project, which resulted in ROS, a widely used open-source robotics software platform.
He is the man, who is leading everyone to a brighter future; his efforts in the field of Artificial Intelligence are commendable. He has influenced millions with Machine Learning programmes on Coursera and shaped the ways in which robotics works.
